Definitely get any job you can until your April job and pay what you can…even if its the minimum until your job in April. And don’t use the cards!

How much do you owe in total?

If it has been six months since you have paid, and you haven’t contacted the credit card company, the debt is probably going to be charged off and sent to a collection agency. I would encourage you to handle the collection agency by yourself. Right now your credit history has been damaged by this, but it can be repaired. Once you have income coming in I recommend you contact the collection agency (via mail; use certified, return-receipt mail for agreements, etc) and offer a settlement amount. Typically if the balance is low (maybe under $2000-$3000) they won’t sue, although they can.

There’s credit companies that can help you. Some even pay off your credit cards, and you make payments to them with less interest, and they usually work out a deal with your credit card company to lower your balance.

Since you have so many cards with high debt and late payments, I think there are significant advantages for you to contact a credit counseling company.

A legitimate company will take care of contacting all of your creditors and negotiating lowered payments and reduced interest rates. Since you will be getting a job in April, there might be a way for them to delay your payments until you start working. They will probably ask for some sort of verification of your employment (the phone number for human resources, etc).

Be very careful when picking a credit counseling company though. There are many shading ones out there who will just take advantage of you (ie. take all of your money and not actually do anything).

Contact the NFCC at.
They can provide you with reputable counseling agencies.

Your credit cards are surely in collection. They want to get paid. If you call your credit card companies they will usually work out a payment plan for you. That’s all you have to do. At this point you can’t get a loan to consolidate, because your credit report will show delinquency. Go through your credit card companies. Once you’ve re-established your credit you can probably get a loan to consolidate, but that will take a while. In the mean time just do the right thing and call your credit card companies. Each place is different.
